22nd April
Northanger Abbey presented by Box Tale Soup - 7.30pm

Another of our very popular Live & Local shows. A delightful comedy-drama by Antonia Christophers and Noel Byrne (Box Tale Soup), bringing Jane Austen's first published novel, to brilliant and dynamic life.

Jane Austen's high-spirited spoof tells of Catherine Morland, a sheltered young woman and daughter of a country clergyman, living in Dorset and wrestling with the eternal dilemma of love verses security  The work of a great writer flexing her creative muscles, amid the fun, 'Northanger Abbey' offers a subtle and well-observed portrait of a society
dedicated to the all-important business of snagging the right husband and marrying well.

Armed with a trunk full of paper props and with seven large paper puppets, the classic story is enacted with beautiful inventiveness and immensely beguiling performances, and with such happy faithfulness that long forgotten lines shine afresh.

'One of the best and truest treatments, bar none, in any dramatic medium.' Libby Purves (BBC Radio 4 'Midweek') / 'Austen must be smiling down.' ★★★★ Times

'I was completely mesmerised by this enchanting production.' Joanna Lumley

The Canterbury Tales presented by GreenMatthews - 7.30pm

Another of our very popular Live & Local shows.
Written in the late 14th century, ‘The Canterbury Tales‘ is the high-water mark of medieval English literature. Based around the concept of a disparate group of pilgrims to the shrine of Thomas à Becket at Canterbury Cathedral who tell each other stories to while away the journey, it paints a rich and vibrant portrait of life in medieval England. All human life is present – from the dark and brooding Pardoner’s Tale to the bawdy Miller’s Tale, via the proto-feminism of the Wife of Bath’s Tale and the simple whimsy of the Nun’s Priest’s Tale. Although Chaucer wrote his masterwork over 600 years ago, it still feels contemporary, fresh and vital – and wholly accessible to modern audiences.

Six of the best-loved tales are told in a variety of styles. Taking visual inspiration from medieval mystery plays and complete with a touring set which has been specially constructed to resemble a medieval travelling theatre. Actor Tom Fermor and musicians Chris Green and Sophie Matthews use drama, storytelling and song to paint a sumptuous picture of life in the Middle Ages, packed with colourful characters, strange situations and laughs a-plenty! They combine the vigour of the medieval period with the musical intricacy of the Renaissance, the grandeur of the Baroque, the pomp and bombast of Victoriana and the barbed wit of 'Blackadder' and '1066 And All That' so the stage is set for a veritable musical feast.
