A New Kitchen for the Saltbox

As many of you will already know, since the rebuilding of the external walls of Salt Village Hall, we have seen a 100% increase in it’s use for a wide range of activities and events. It is wonderful to know that the improvements are valued and that the hall is meeting the needs of the Community.

However, as with any building, maintenance and improvement is ongoing and we have big plans to make your hall even more welcoming and just as the kitchen is the heart of the home, so it is with our hall. Be it a supper night, a meeting or fundraising activity, you can guarantee someone will want to have access to a kitchen to prepare and/or serve food and drink. Add to that increased interest in private hire for parties and celebrations and you soon realise a modern efficient kitchen is essential.

Well, ours is falling short. It is 16 years old, has struggled with damp and condensation before the walls were fixed, and the units are collapsing. So we think it is time for a new one!

We have made an application to the BIG LOTTERY FUND under their Awards for All programme, which is designed to help small community and charitable organisations like our Village Hall. Grants of between £300 and £10,000 are offered to cover all or part of the project cost. Full details can be found on their website www.biglotteryfund.org.uk. We applied for £ 9,970 to cover the bulk of the cost of a new kitchen and expect to use our own resources for some of the appliances and to help with redecoration and disposal of the old kitchen.

The funding is designed to build stronger, healthier communities with more active citizens working together to tackle local issues. In Salt this means providing services within the village. This is especially important as our public transport is minimal and non-existent at night, making it difficult to attend classes in Stafford or Stone or even to go to the cinema or for a meal out. Here at Salt Village Hall we try to provide a range of activities to offer something for everyone to join in. Keep an eye on the website, noticeboard or Compass magazine for up to date information on coming events and groups which meet regularly.

So join us and get involved!

If our application for funding is successful we hope to be fitting our new kitchen in the autumn, this time with sufficient oven space to cook meals for up to 80 people and a brand new dishwasher to help with the washing up! If you would like to join in with our working party then get in touch with Edward 01889 508224 or Angela on 01889 508486. If you just want to join in once the new kitchen is installed that’s OK too, we hope to see you at one of our autumn events, proudly displaying our new amenity!

Remember by supporting your village hall, you help us to earn income, which enables us to run the hall and put on a range of activities for you. So an active community is exactly what we aim to be!
